  • GENERAL OVERVIEW:

This institute is founded for the purpose of researching the histories, cultures, languages and relations with the countries they are dependent to, of the minorities living in the Eastern Mediterranean regions/countries which is also known as the Levant (Arabian Middle East), adopting a historical and cultural approach. It is an institution which aims to make the voices of the cultures which have been facing with the problem of lack of representation especially politically and historically heard. Antakya, which is placed in the centre of this study, as a border city that is on the border between Turkey and Syria, on the edge of the Eastern Mediterranean, representing both the peoples and urbanity in the best way as an ancient city, is an interface that opens from Turkey to the Middle East. Therefore, this institution has a field of study involving essentially the history of Antakya and the Levant region and the Middle East Arab peoples. Today, the Levant region contains national borders of Syria, Lebanon, Palestine – Israel and Jordan. Our institution focuses on publishing, educational and art studies at an academic level taking subjects such as Middle East Arab Sociology, Anthropology and Geopolitics as basis. Considering the Middle Eastern political structure, uprisings and wars of today, it aims to contribute to peace and freedom in the Middle East by an analytical understanding and explanation of the effects of crises and changes in especially Antakya, across the Levant region, on the peoples, within the frame of the world order. Our institution constitutes an exclusive example while taking the pulse of a multi-ethnical and multi-religious city, combining both local and international aspects and critical analyses.

Hatay (In Arabic; ‘Iskanderuna’; as for its French-mandated Syrian name, ‘The Sanjak of Alexandretta’), is a rather central city with its geopolitical importance and due to its critical history, for comprehending and explaining the political and social dynamics of firstly, the Levant; secondly, contemporary Middle East. Along with being considered within the Levant region, it is located inside the borders of Turkey. While studying the history of Antakya and its peoples’ oral history and socio-political characteristics particularly, the institution has been establishing its general perspective on historical and political studies in line with Middle East Arab geography. Basically, the study units work on using anthropological, historical and sociological methods. Besides the local ethnographic and oral historical studies, the institution with its academic staff investigates the Levant and Turkish relations, Arabic language, culture and minorities and publishing these studies by means of articles, book abstracts and projects. It aims to organize exhibitions, conferences, stage performances and works of identity-art-memory, with its staff of culture-art. It is in our essential objectives to analyze and to contribute to the analysis of the traditions, languages, ethnography and geography, local and regional problems, debates and social structures of the Arab peoples.

The Methodology that the Committees shall benefit:

Especially “qualitative” techniques shall be taken as basis and one-to-one interviews shall be prepared by benefitting from focus groups and on-site observations. Qualitative research aims to find answers to particular questions as the result of the analyses of individuals living in various social environments. The researchers using qualitative techniques, concern how the individuals interpret their environments by means of symbols, rituals, social structures and roles (Berg, 2001:13). Qualitative techniques help the researchers to understand how the individuals form their perception and interpretation and their daily lives. It is tried to be figured out how the individuals interviewed with interpret and identify the groups out of the community, in which way the religious practices take place in the daily life and their political stances by means of this techniques. In the interviews, sometimes direct questions are applied and sometimes it is focused on narrations or the examples that the individuals give from their lives.
